You searched for a way to free up space, installed a highly rated cleaner, and the scan found "12.4 GB of junk". You tapped Clean and got a full-screen offer: 3-day free trial, then $6.99/week. The close button is small and grey.
This is the most common business model among iPhone cleaner apps. Here is how it works, how to get out of it, and what to use instead.
How the model works
- A free, instant scan. The app reads your Photos library and finds duplicates, similar photos and large videos. This part is real and works.
- A big, urgent number. Often including "junk" or "cache" that iOS never lets apps touch.
- A paywall on delete. The review screen is free; removing anything is not.
- A trial that renews weekly. Weekly pricing hides the annual cost: $6.99 a week is over $360 a year.
App Store reviews for the most downloaded cleaners are full of the same complaints: a charge that showed up after the trial, a subscription that kept going after the app was deleted, and a "lifetime" plan bought without knowing the weekly one was still active.
How to cancel a cleaner subscription
Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription.
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name → Subscriptions.
- Select the cleaner app.
- Tap Cancel Subscription (or Cancel Free Trial) and confirm.
If the app is not listed, check whether you subscribed with a different Apple Account, or through Family Sharing.
How to ask Apple for a refund
- Go to reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in.
- Choose Request a refund and pick a reason. "I didn't intend to purchase this item" and "Item didn't work as expected" are the usual choices.
- Select the charge and submit.
Apple handles the refund, not the developer. Requests made soon after the charge are the most likely to be approved.
What cleaner apps cannot do on iPhone
These claims show up in paywalled apps and are not possible on iOS:
- Clearing other apps' cache or junk files. Apps run in a sandbox and cannot see each other's files.
- Clearing System Data. Only iOS manages it.
- Boosting RAM or battery. iOS manages memory itself. Closing apps does not speed anything up.
What cleaner apps can do is work with your Photos library — and Apple's free tools already cover a lot of that.
Free ways to do the same job
- Photos → Duplicates (iOS 16+) merges exact duplicates. See how to delete duplicate photos on iPhone.
- Photos → Screenshots lets you bulk-select screenshots. See how to delete all screenshots on iPhone.
- FreeMemory finds duplicates, large videos, screenshots and compressible photos in one scan. It is free — no ads, no in-app purchases, no subscription, no trial — and photos never leave the phone.
- Clever Cleaner is also free and adds similar-photo detection and video compression.
There is a comparison of all of these in best free iPhone cleaner apps.
Why FreeMemory has no paywall
FreeMemory started as a free, ad-free Android cleaner, and the iPhone version follows the same rule: no ads, no purchases, no premium tier. Because there is nothing to sell, there is no reason to inflate the scan result or hide the delete button. Everything you remove goes to an in-app Bin first, so you can change your mind.
