Best Free iPhone Cleaner Apps (No Subscription) — 2026

The best free iPhone cleaners with no subscription are Apple's own Photos tools (Duplicates and Screenshots albums), FreeMemory, and Clever Cleaner. All three are free with no ads. Most other popular cleaner apps let you scan for free but need a weekly or yearly subscription before they delete anything.

Search the App Store for "cleaner" and nearly every result is free to download. Very few are free to use. The usual pattern: a scan runs instantly, a big red number appears, and the delete button opens a paywall with a three-day trial that renews at around $5–8 a week.

This list covers what is actually free, what is not, and what iOS already does without any app.

How we picked

Every option, including our own, was judged on five questions:

  1. Can you delete without paying? A free scan with a paid delete button is not free.
  2. Are there ads?
  3. Do your photos stay on the device?
  4. Do you see every item before it is deleted?
  5. Does it do something iOS cannot do on its own?

Full disclosure: FreeMemory is our app. Where another option is better, we say so. Prices and features below were checked in October 2026 — check the App Store listing before you install, as both change often.

Before you install anything: what iOS already does

  • Photos → Duplicates (iOS 16+) finds and merges exact duplicates for free.
  • Photos → Screenshots collects every screenshot so you can select and delete in bulk.
  • Settings → General → iPhone Storage offloads unused apps and reviews large Messages attachments.
  • Optimize iPhone Storage moves full-size originals to iCloud, if you have the space.

What iOS does not do: sort your library by file size, show how much space each group uses, put large videos, duplicates and screenshots in one list, or compress photos. That gap is the only reason to install a cleaner.

The comparison

| App | Free to delete? | Ads | Subscription | Duplicates | Similar photos | Photo compression | |---|---|---|---|---|---|---| | Apple Photos (built-in) | Yes | No | No | Yes | No | No | | FreeMemory | Yes | No | No | Yes | No | Yes | | Clever Cleaner | Yes | No | No | Yes | Yes | Live Photos + video | | Gemini Photos | Trial, then paid | No | Yes / one-time | Yes | Yes | No | | Slidebox | Basic free | No | Optional premium | Swipe review | Swipe review | No | | Cleanup, Smart Cleaner and similar | Trial, then paid | Varies | Weekly / yearly | Yes | Yes | Varies |

Apple Photos (built-in)

Best for: anyone who only needs duplicates and screenshots gone.

The Duplicates album is genuinely good. It keeps the highest-quality copy and merges metadata. The downsides are that it only appears after indexing (usually overnight while charging), shows no sizes, and covers nothing but duplicates.

FreeMemory

Best for: clearing storage in one pass, with no ads, no subscription and no uploads.

One scan of your Photos library groups duplicates, the largest videos and photos (sorted by size), screenshots, and photos that can be compressed. Screenshots and large media can be reviewed card by card with swipes. Anything you remove goes to an in-app Bin first, so you can restore it, and then to iOS Recently Deleted. The Optimizer downsizes oversized photos — often around 75% smaller — and asks before touching the originals.

Where it falls short: it does not detect similar photos (burst shots, near-identical selfies), and it does not compress videos. Clever Cleaner does both.

Clever Cleaner

Best for: similar-photo detection and video compression, free.

Made by CleverFiles (the Disk Drill team), Clever Cleaner is free with no ads and no paywall at the time of writing. It finds similar photos as well as duplicates, and compresses Live Photos and videos. If similar-photo cleanup is your main goal, it is the better free choice than FreeMemory.

Gemini Photos

Best for: people who want the strongest "best shot" suggestions and do not mind paying.

From MacPaw, Gemini picks the best photo in a group of similar shots and flags blurry photos and photos of notes. It is polished, but the full feature set is behind a subscription or one-time purchase after the trial.

Slidebox

Best for: going through a messy camera roll by hand.

Slidebox is a swipe-to-sort organizer rather than a scanner: swipe up to delete, tap to file into albums. Basic use is free, with a premium tier for larger libraries and extras.

Cleanup, Smart Cleaner and similar apps

Best for: avoiding, unless you read the subscription terms first.

These are among the most downloaded cleaners on the App Store, and the scanning works. The problem is the business model: a free scan, a paywall on delete, and trials that renew weekly. Their reviews are dominated by billing complaints rather than features. We cover the pattern in the weekly-subscription trap.

What to avoid in any iPhone cleaner

  • "Junk", "cache" or "RAM" cleaning. iOS does not allow it. The number is fiction.
  • A paywall before you can review results.
  • A trial that starts automatically when you tap "Continue" on the first screen.
  • Requests for contacts, location or an account that a photo cleaner does not need.

Which one to install

  • Only duplicates? Use the free Duplicates album in Photos.
  • Storage full and you want one scan for videos, duplicates, screenshots and compression? FreeMemory.
  • Lots of near-identical shots or big videos to compress? Clever Cleaner.
  • Willing to pay for best-shot picking? Gemini Photos.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a completely free iPhone cleaner app?

Yes. FreeMemory and Clever Cleaner are both free with no ads and no subscription. Apple's built-in Duplicates and Screenshots albums in the Photos app are free too.

Do iPhone cleaner apps actually work?

They work on photos and videos, which is the only part of storage iOS lets them touch. They cannot clear other apps' caches, System Data or RAM. An app that claims to is showing you a number, not freeing space.

Are iPhone cleaner apps safe?

The safe ones process photos on the device, show you everything before deleting, and do not need an account. Be wary of apps that start a free trial on first launch or ask for payment before you can review results.

Why do so many iPhone cleaners cost $5 a week?

Weekly subscriptions make money from people who forget to cancel a trial. The app usually costs more per year than an iCloud storage upgrade that would solve the problem outright.

What is the best duplicate photo remover for iPhone?

Start with the free Duplicates album in Photos. If you also want large videos, screenshots and compression in one scan, FreeMemory and Clever Cleaner are both free. Clever Cleaner also finds similar (not just duplicate) photos.
