Select photos to compress
FreeMemory shows a grid of JPEGs with their current size, estimated compressed size, and percentage savings for each.
Review the savings estimate
You see what you will save before committing. Typical savings range from 40% to 75% depending on the original file.
Compress on-device
FreeMemory re-encodes each JPEG at a quality level that keeps photos looking sharp. No file leaves your phone.
Original is replaced
The compressed version replaces the original in-place. There is no cloud backup of the original — this is permanent.
Compression is permanent
The original file is replaced. There is no undo and no cloud backup. If you want to keep the originals, back them up before compressing.
Common questions
How much smaller do photos get?
Typically 40–75% smaller, depending on the original. A 6 MB photo from a recent Android camera often compresses to under 2 MB with no visible difference at normal viewing sizes.
Does compression affect quality?
FreeMemory uses lossy JPEG compression targeting ~75% quality. At that level, quality loss is generally not visible on phone or laptop screens. For professional editing or printing, keep the originals.
Can I undo a compression?
No. Compression replaces the original permanently. FreeMemory shows you size estimates before you compress so you can decide with full information.
Does it work on PNG or HEIC files?
No. The optimizer currently works on JPEG files only. PNG and HEIC files are not processed.
